Koelenhof Cellar’s Stellenbosch 1679 Old Vine Pinotage recognised at SA Terroir Wine Awards

Koelenhof Cellar’s Stellenbosch 1679 Old Vine Pinotage 2023 has been recognised as a winner in the Heritage Wines category at the 21st SA Terroir Wine Awards.

The Heritage Wines category celebrates wines made from vineyards that are 35 years and older. The Koelenhof vineyard dates back to 1975, meaning these Pinotage vines have been growing in Stellenbosch for more than 50 years.

The vineyard is planted predominantly on Tukulu and Dresden soils, with shale forming the base of the site. It is this combination of location, soil and vine age that gives the wine a connection to a specific piece of Stellenbosch.

The SA Terroir Wine Awards place a strong emphasis on origin. Entries must be certified Wine of Origin and come from a defined South African wine-growing area, whether a Single Vineyard, Estate, Ward or District.

For the Old Vine Project, the recognition of the Stellenbosch 1679 Old Vine Pinotage is another reminder that South Africa’s old vineyards are not simply part of the past. They are still producing wines today, and their continued survival depends on the value placed on them.

The award also adds another important red wine to the growing collection of recognised wines from South Africa’s heritage vineyards.
